The much awaited UGC-NET exam was held successfully at Jubilee Memorial School Mokokchung on Sunday.
Out of 94 centers nation-wide, Nagaland University ‘Code No 64’ witnessed scholars appearing exams in 24 disciplines mostly on social sciences and related subjects to prove their worth in two categories; Lectureship and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).
Prof A Lanu Ao, coordinator of UGC-NET Exams NU Code No 64, disclosed that 725 students applied for the exams, out of which 622 submitted their application forms.
While scrutinizing the forms, 61 applicants were rejected on technical aspects with 561 scholars found to be suitable to appear the exam i.e. 542 were from Scheduled Tribe, 3 from General category, 9 from Scheduled Caste and 7 from OBC. Scholars from outside Nagaland also appeared the said exam, stated Prof Lanu.
With regard to the smooth conduct of the exams, Prof Lanu appreciated the co-operation and assistance from the ‘community’ of Mokokchung towards Nagaland University officials in making the exam a success. He particularly appreciated the fraternity of Jubilee Memorial School for deputing twenty-three teachers as invigilators for the exams.
Prof Lanu Ao also appreciated proprietors of various lodges and hotels, especially Metsupen Hotel (Tourist Lodge) for providing 30% discount to scholars staying at the hotel.
It may be mentioned that The Metsupen Hotel even arranged transportation for the scholars to the venue of exam.
UGC-NET Exam Coordinator also appreciated the Nagaland State Transport for extending all help in transporting the scholars till Mokokchung, Mokokchung Police Station and Mokokchung DEF for providing security at the venue, canteen and a medical team by the staff of NU Lumami.
Reacting to critics questioning the logic of conducting the exams at Mokokchung, and not elsewhere, NU officials at the venue noted that as per the UGC norms, the exam was bound to be conducted at the concerned University Campus of the state. They said since NU Hq Lumami at present does not have sufficient infrastructure to conduct and accommodate several hundreds of students, it was decided that the exam would be conducted at the town nearest to NU Headquarters.
According to reliable source, even NSF officials met Nagaland University Officials urging them to shift the venue either Kohima or Dimapur.
However, after a thorough discussion, the meeting concluded that it was impossible to shift the center elsewhere as it was a central exam which had to be conducted as per UGC norms.
Nonetheless, it was learnt that the NSF after the discussion, decided to extend all possible help for smooth conduct of the exam.
AKM (Ao Student Conference) also extended its moral support to help the UGC-NET examinees during the exams in every possible manner. Speaking to media persons, NU Officials said the next UGC-NET Exams, usually held in the month of December, will probably be conducted at Mokokchung town until NU Hq at Lumami is further developed.
Interestingly, they also voiced out in favour of having a center for conducting UGC-NET exams for science stream in Nagaland along with a center for conducting the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET), which is equivalent to passing NET exams.
According to NU officials, Nagaland is the only NE state that does not have a center for conducting SLET exams.
NU officials also said that they were trying their level best to make Nagaland University acquire an exam centre for conducting UGC-NET science stream exam as well as SLET exams in Nagaland.
