In a shocking disclosure, Naga Students Union Chennai (NSUC) revealed that 14 Naga girls (age between 20 -27 and names withheld), were lured into prostitution racket reportedly by Korean national at Sriperumbudur, outskirts of Chennai city. NSUC got wind of it when one of the girls rang up one of its officer bearers over differences with her friends.
NSUC swung into action and nabbed seven of the girls and later another seven by mid-May. They revealed that the girls confessed they were promised good job as waitresses with free accommodation and lucrative salary in Korean hotels and then forced into prostitution.
Talking to Nagaland Post, NSUC office bearer disclosed that the girls stayed in rented houses at Sriperumbudur where the Korean would call up to work in the resort by day and as prostitutes by night. It was disclosed that the Korean offered Rs.10, 000 to Rs. 15,000 as monthly pay. The girls said they earned Rs 30, 000 to Rs. 40,000 per month besides their usual pay. Some of them were in the business for two years while some joined recently.
The NSUC member said the girls were mostly school drop-outs who read up to class seven to ten, while one read up to Class twelve. After a meeting with Naga Elders in Chennai, the NSUC decided against revealing the names of the girls but cautioned them of dire consequences in the future.
NSUC said the plight highlighted the ugly fact of unemployment problem and negligence by authorities back home. The NSUC disclosed that the girls were sent back home to Nagaland in two batches.
