A security alert was sounded in the western part of Meghalaya Wednesday after Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) rebels attacked a police outpost in East Garo Hills district.
Armed rebels of the GNLA, headed by a police officer-turned rogue Champion R Sangma, in the wee hours of Wednesday fired indiscriminately at a police outpost with automatic weapons in Dobu area, about 300 Km from Shillong, the State capital of Meghalaya.
“A group of ten to 12 armed GNLA rebels attacked our police outpost in Dobu, but the rebels fled from the area after security forces retaliated back at them,” J.F.K.Marak, the police chief of East Garo Hills district said. Marak said the group is suspected to have been led by another police constable-turned outlaw Savio R Marak. “These attacks are aimed at to create fear psychosis in the area,” the police official said.
Meanwhile, a high security alert has been sounded in the region after the attacked.
The three districts of Garo Hills region in west Meghalaya have witnessed a spurt in GNLA’s anti-national activities, prompting the government to launch an offensive.
