Deptt. mulls systematic statistical system: Tohanba

Parliamentary secretary, IPR, Economics & Statistics, R. Tohanba said that the department of Economics and Statistics was in the process of developing a systematic statistical system.
Addressing the National Statistics Day, which is also the birthday of Prof. PC Mahalanobis, on Wednesday at the Conference hall of Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Kohima as the chief guest, he said with the effective statistic system, it would ensue technical coordination in all matters relating to statistical activities in the state.
Mentioning that the 13th Finance Commission has granted fund to the department to strengthen the statistical system , the Parliamentary Secretary said that the purpose of grant is to improve the district statistical system by listing all the business activities, local bodies account, farm activities, pooling of sample survey data and to provide connectivity .
“The broad objective of this grant is to empower and strengthen the statistical framework and systems to provide comprehensive and standardized economic and social data to support policy and decision making.
He also urged the officers of the department to judiciously utilize the fund to achieve the goals of the 13th. Finance Commission.
Appreciating this year’s statistics day theme “Gender Statistics” he said that this give us an opportunity to raise the issues and problems faced in our society.
“Gender issues as we know, involved social, cultural, political and economic well being of a human” he stated, adding it is basically a an advancement of values and standards of human progress and advancement. He also said that the department of economics and statistics has a great role to play in collecting relevant data relating to gender issues. Pointing out that gender issue is a new paradigm; Tohanba said that collective efforts of committed and dedicated officers, the date on gender issues can be well synchronized to enable the government to formulate better policy to address to the problems.
The parliamentary secretary informed that the new Directorate office building and residence of director at New Capital Complex, Kohima is under construction and is expected to be compeleted during 2013-14. He also informed that the department will propose construction of staffs quarters in all the districts during the 12th five year plan and look forward to discuss the matter with government. He also gave away the prizes of essay competition.
Delivering the key note address Secretary, & Economics & Statistics, Dr. L. Daniel Longchar said that Gender statistics is a field of statistics that cut across the traditional fields to the identify, produce and disseminate statistics that reflect the realities of lives of women and men and policy issue relating to gender.
He also said that Gender statistics can help eliminate gender-based stereotype by providing evidence on actual situation of men and women.
The programme was chaired by additional director & HOD, Economics & Statistics, Y. Sacheo Ovung and the vote of thanks was delivered by R Taka Jamir deputy director.
