Call for sanitation drive in Kohima

Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar and chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday called upon citizens of Kohima to take responsibility n clearing their own garbage, and make hygienic living their way of life. In the light of their concerns, a sanitation drive in Kohima was proposed during the 25th annual general meeting of the Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland State Branch (IRCSN).
Nikhil Kumar, who is also the president of IRCSN, said that the cleanliness drive should be the basis for something meaningful in future. He asserted that people responding to means of hygiene and cleanliness should not only be limited in Kohima but other districts as well. While stating that Nagaland is a vibrant state, the governor noted it lagged behind in hygiene and agreed with the suggestion of the CM for a sanitation drive.
While congratulating IRCSN for enrolling 448 new members to the society in 2010-11, he however regretted that not a single member was enrolled by Mokokchung and Kiphire district branches. The governor lauded IRCSN branches in Mon, Longleng, Tuensang and Kohima for enrolling a good number as members. He said with a corpus fund of Rs. 1 crore, the IRCSN can expand its activities to meet humanitarian needs. Neiphiu Rio who is also the vice president of IRCSN urged each citizen to take responsibility in disposing their own garbage and proposed a sanitation drive in Kohima district.
Rio said that this was discussed during a meeting with municipal council, colony leaders, district administration where the government would provide mobile vehicles to collect wastes, while sanitation fee would be collected from every household as part of the sanitation drive.
Nikhil also gave away badges to ten patrons and ten vice-patrons, chairman and members of the state council for Junior and Youth Red Cross, and certificate of appreciation to ERIL for donating an ambulance to the IRCSN. Earlier, Zakie Kire, general secretary IRCSN gave the report of IRCSN business session. Legistators, bureaucrats, and members and well wishers of IRCSN attended the programme.
