Nagaland Rural Bank (NRB) has successfully migrated all its branches to 100% Core Banking Solution (CBS) platform where branches can now affect transfer of funds from one branch to another without waste of time. Under the able guidance of current NRB chairman I. Sashi Pongener, the bank established on March 3, 1983, has improved tremendously in terms of improved business and technology during the past two years. NRB is jointly owned by the Government of India, Government of Nagaland and the State Bank of India (SBI).
Pongener said 100% migration to CBS was mainly due to continued support by the sponsor bank (SBI) and revealed that NRB is to implement RTGS facilities, open more CBS branches, ATMs or tie-up arrangement for using ATMs of other banks to provide better services to customers. He informed all customers of NRB to obtain their new 11-digit account number. The NRB during the last two years, has not only recovered ground as a viable financial institution in Nagaland but also seen a turn around in its financial position after Pongener took over as chairman. Today NRB branches are spread throughout the state making it at par in terms of rural outreach with the SBI, the Lead Bank in Nagaland.
Other state governments in the Northeast have promoted their rural banks in many ways through adequate financial support and involvement in major development projects. They also attach due importance to the office of the rural bank chairman who is included in various development panels. In contrast, Nagaland government has not given the importance its rural bank deserves.
