Training on cashew nut plantation

Joint director directorate horticulture, Kohima, Pawan Kumar Friday gave a detailed presentation on cashew nut, starting from plantation to production to the enthusiastic cashew nut growers at the one-day training programme held at State Horticulture Nursery (SHN), Green Park 4th mile, Dimapur.
He highlighted on the use of technology to boost large scale production of cashew nut and its benefits to the cashew nut growers from three districts- Dimapur, Wokha and Peren.
Joint director who was also the resource person of the training revealed that Nagaland alone was producing approximately 17 metric tonne of raw cashew nut annually after its plantation started way back in 2002. Cashew nut was introduced in Nagaland in 1999 on trial basis at different locations and satisfied with the result, plantation was started in 2002, he said.
He reminded that out of the total production of raw cashew nut produced in the state, Dimapur alone was producing 6 metric tonne followed by Peren (5 MT), Mokokchung (4 MT) and Wokha (2 MT).
He said India being the second largest producer of cashew nut and the government of India shifting its attention to North East region for plantation of cashew nut, the department under National Horticulture Board has provided 8 mini processing units to Nagaland.
The processing units were distributed to four districts– three to Dimapur, two to Peren, two to Mokokchung and one to Ralan, Wokha.
On the query raised by the participants for plantation of cashew nut, joint director said June to July was the best season in Nagaland and added that foothills and barren areas were suitable for plantation.
It may be noted that the grafted plants of cashew nuts are imported from Russia.
Earlier, DHO Dimapur, Eyongoi Angami chaired the function while president cashew nut growers association, Nagaland, Kennet delivered the key note address.
