Manipur Congress president Gaikhangam on Tuesday said the BJP-led NDA government’s “dictatorial” move to abrogate Article 370 of Indian Constitution was a great threat to smaller states like Manipur and other Northeast states.

Addressing a news conference after party level Patriot Day observation at Imphal Congress Bhavan, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president alleged that the recent move of scrapping Article 370 and bifurcation Jammu and Kashmir were done without prior consent of the people of the state.

He said the party in power at the Centre had done it taking utmost advantage of being majority in the house of Parliament and similar act to scrap the Article 371 of Indian Constitution cannot be ruled out in  the manner BJP is ruling the country..

Articles 370 and 371 were part of the Constitution of India at the time of its commencement on January 26, 1950. Articles 371A through 371J which accord “special provisions” for 11 states including six states of the Northeast were incorporated subsequently.

“The move of reducing the state of Jammu and Kashmir into Union territory will not be desirable move for the people of the state. The move is a great threat to the smaller states, particularly Northeast states,” he said

There were apprehensions of Centre taking up similar move to abrogate the Article 371 in the mind of the people of the region, he added . The MPCC president slammed political parties, particularly operating in the state for welcoming the Centre’s move and asked will they support if similar move of bifurcating the state was taken up by the Centre. The Centre move is a great threat to the smaller states like Manipur where territorial integrity is at stake, he reiterated.

Whether the centre’s move  was right or wrong, it is true that Jammu and Kashmir is in Indian Union because of the Article 370. If the Article was not there, Jammu and Kashmir might not be part of India, he said. Regarding the people’s demand for justice for 12-year-old student who was found  hanging in her hostel room on July 18 last, the MPCC said that the party is with the people.  He said the party has been pressing the government to solve the case and lamented that it is unfortunate that the government is yet to come out with an investigation that will satisfy the people. Government must deliver justice to the victim family by finding out the truth behind the death of the student and by booking the culprit(s) responsible for the death of the student, he added.

As police investigation was in progress, Congress has nothing to comment but it will be better for the government to solve the case at the earliest, he said.
