ACAUT demands probe into delayed road project

DIMAPUR, OCT 5 (NPN) | Publish Date: 10/5/2018 11:47:24 AM IST

Alleging irregularities in the delayed Pukhungri-Avankhu road project, the ACAUT Nagaland has asserted that the state government should initiate an independent inquiry and black list the firm that was awarded the project.

In a press release, ACAUT chairman, Tia Longchar, co-chairman, Simon Kelio, and secretary, Hetoi Chishi, said an RTI was filed on the construction of Pukhungri-Avankhu road project and the revelations from the RTI has been “nothing short of startling of the blatant and systemic form of corruption carried out with impunity, without a care or fear of penalty.”

As per the RTI response, ACAUT said the road project work was awarded to a firm. The commencement date for the work was January 24, 2011 and the projected date for completion was March 2013. Out of the total project cost of Rs.23.39 crore, ACAUT said Rs.21.88 crore was released and sanctioned.

ACAUT stated that as per RTI reply, 94% of the earth work in formation has been completed as on June 2018, which it termed as “highly questionable” as the reason cited for the delay in completion of the project was “due to un-anticipated hard rock requiring blasting”. “The revelation of the RTI has been simply shocking, that a project which is supposed to have been finished in early 2013 and when of almost 94% of the total project cost has been sanctioned the Pukhungri–Avankhu road seem barely visible and far away from completion,” ACAUT said.

It claimed that in Nagaland construction projects are deliberately stalled and delayed to revise the cost of the project cost.

Describing the delayed road project as “a perfect case of blatant corruption practice” that has been going on in Nagaland, ACAUT said such practice was the root cause for the under development and poor infrastructure in the state.

ACAUT Nagaland opined that firm should be immediately black listed and stopped from doing any ongoing work projects until a thorough investigation was done.
