In an effort to identify and pick talented young players, All India Football Federation (AIFF) in collaboration with Nagaland Football Association (NFA) is conducting two-day trials for Indian national team at IG Stadium, Kohima.

The trials conducted under the supervision of AIFF head of scouting Vikram Nanivadekar and Subhas Chakraborty, former international football player commenced Wednesday.

The selection trials were for Under-16 to U-17 for boys and U-14 to U-17 for girls.

Vikram Nanivadekar, head of Scouting Indian National teams AIFF speaking to this correspondent said AIFF are scouting talents for national team camps under different age groups.  He said the trials will be connected to the upcoming campaign of the national team in various AFC age-group championships and FIFA competition.

Nanivadekar said that those shortlisted players will be invited for extended trials for national team camps as per the national team requirement.

He said scouting campaign started before the U-17 world cup and added that AIFF will cover each state of the country at least once every two years.

“This is one way we are scouting players, Nagaland isn’t taking much part in the tournaments outside Nagaland and some other states as well but you know that talent can be there anywhere. So we (AIFF) created these scouting trails “he said.

The national team camps are in residential format and have exposure tour to overseas for the young national teams.  AIFF head scout hoped that this kind of football trials will encouraged the young budding players to take football seriously in the state.

On being asked if scouting trails will be held in Nagaland for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2020, he said “We are already looking for that”.

Nagaland Football Association (NFA) president Atuo Mezhur Sekhose said the response from the state was good and except Longleng and Zunheboto districts, other district have sent their representative for the trials. He later informed that 16 boys have shortlisted and will play against a club on Thursday.

A total of 56 players (36 boys and 20 girls) from across the state registered for the trials.
