Manipur unit of All India Lawyers’ Union (AILU) extended its support on the demand for granting Scheduled Tribe status to Meitei/Meetei of Manipur.
“The AILU Manipur State Committee firmly support on the long pending demand for granting ST status to Meitei/Meetei community since 2012,” a statement of the lawyers’ body said on Saturday.
Granting ST status to the community was necessary for preserving and protecting the land and identity of the indigenous people belonging to Meetei community, it added. The committee will also approach President of India and governor of Manipur to expedite granting ST status to the community who had already been recognised as OBC community under article 342 of the Constitution of India.
Meanwhile, Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) is all set to organize  a public rally on the streets of  Imphal on Sunday.
A source in the STDCM said that all the necessary permissions have been obtained from the district magistrates of Imphal West and East districts. Imphal East magistrate has also granted permission for holding a public meeting at Hatta Kangjeibung, it added.
STDCM is organising the public rally to press the state government to send a recommendation for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the ST list of India to the Centre which is mandatory for government of India for consideration.
