AKM check documents at border gates

The Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) today held a press conference at its office chamber and explained the steps and measures taken so far by the AKM under its project “Survival Mokokchung” in the wake of the release of NRC Draft in Assam.

AKM said on August 9 and 10, two teams were dispatched to the check gates at the Assam-Nagaland border, namely Tsutapela (towards Mariani) and Nagaland Gate Watiyongpang (towards Halwating) which is a gateway to 3-4 districts of the state. About 60-70 volunteers of the AKM conducted an awareness campaign and verified documents like ILP, Voter IDs and others. The team said that around 128 ILP defaulters were detected while some of them were deported right from the gate. After the verification, the team at the press briefing suggested some measures that the state government could take up. The team found that no proper verification of documents was being carried out at the check gates and suggested that a proper mechanism should be in place to check/issue documents like ILP at the gate itself besides streamlining the entire system. The AKM further added that volunteers had been assigned at these check gates for further actions whenever it is necessary.
