An opinion on our sorry state of affairs

I would like to begin by appreciating the leadership of Shri. T.R Zeliang under whose tenure as the Chief Minister of Nagaland, we witnessed most of the major development projects that are taking shape today throughout the State, especially in the road sector. It is evident that prior to his government most of the developments were only on papers. I further laud the ACAUT team for spearheading the herculean task of challenging and fighting against corruption, unabated taxation and backdoor appointments under various government departments and organizations within the state.

The Indian government had exempted the state of Nagaland from income tax. However, the internal taxation system that currently exists in Nagaland from various quarters like the underground tax, deduction from various organizations, departments, political parties and ministers etc.., has overburdened the general public and taken a severe toll on our economy and infrastructure.

Further, Nagaland government by enacting NLTP Act and declaring Nagaland as a dry State, without strictly implementing it have only contributed in creating more syndicates and black market Thus, my appeal to the present PDA government will be to take serious note of this anomaly and either strictly implement it and not for the purpose of appeasement or as a showpiece, or to completely do away with this Act.

Thus far, we have not seen any development projects being implemented from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sbah constituency funds. However, our Naga leaders tend to speak only about developments at any given opportunity. The general public should no longer remain gullible and be swayed by such rhetoric. Until and unless the Naga public strive to eradicate the practice of selling votes during election or the practice of electing candidate(s) from larger village or electing candidate(s) on the bases of their wealth, clan, tribe gender etc. no tangible development can be implemented.

In our North Eastern Region amongst Hindu and Muslim dominates states. The states of Nagaland and Mizoram are the only two Christian dominated states. However unlike in Nagaland, Mizoram has dedicated followers subscribing to Christian principles and it is reflected in their governance and development process. We can witness the stark difference even in the quality of leadership they produce and elect.

We, the Nagas had fought and struggled for sovereignty from the British rule in the past and for decades now. We are still continuing the fight struggle for sovereignty from the Indian government. However, today we can see that we have dedicated from the real cause and rather indulge in fighting amongst ourselves. Overburdening and victimizing the public through taxation and extortion etc.

All the right thinking citizens must take collective responsibility over issues concerning general public and stand up against any form of corruption and unabated taxation.
