Angry mob Tuesday stormed a local court in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district and police had to resort to lathi-charge and blank fire to control the situation. Several protestors, mostly women suffered injuries in the chaotic confrontation.

Reports said that the mob stormed the court when Saikul police produced Md Rohit alias Rajesh (29) before the court of chief judicial magistrate Kangpokpi with a prayer for further remand to their custody.

Md Rohit was arrested on August 20 by police in connection with murder of 26-year-old Pukhrihongbam Memi Chanu of Ekou Bazar under Saikul police station.

When the police brought the accused person in the court around 1.30 pm, a large number of people belonging to the victim’s side suddenly stormed the court complex from various directions. The chaotic sense prevailed in the court lasted till around 4 pm. The agitating people broke the gate of the court complex which was locked down by the police sensing the tense situation.

Despite police lathi-charged at the gate, the agitating people refused to retreat and some of them entered the court complex by crossing the brick fencing of the court complex before additional police team led by the district SP arrived.

The mob also attempted to enter the court room where the CJM was hearing police prayer for further custody compelling the police to fire several rounds in the air to put the situation under control.

After more than three hours, the police cleared the agitating people from the court complex.

Meanwhile, the CJM has granted a three-day further remand of the accused person while directing the police to produce him again on September 1.
