Agriculture production commissioner (APC), Nagaland, Y. Kikheto Sema met union secretary, water resources, river development & ganga rejuvenation (WR, RD & GR), Pankaj Kumar, who is also the former chief secretary of Nagaland at New Delhi on Wednesday.

According to a DIPR report, Kikheto highlighted water scarcity in Nagaland and said although Nagaland along with other NE states received high rainfall during the monsoon, the lean season experienced water scarcity even for drinking purpose.

He was content that an officer who served Nagaland in various capacities and someone who understood the situation of the regions was now currently the union secretary of WR, RD & GR.

Kikheto also appealed to the union secretary to formulate the policy and schemes on water conservation and management for hilly states.

He stressed on the importance of catchment area treatment and shared his experiences of the springshed development which was introduced and successfully implemented by land resources department (LRD) and suggested the union secretary for implementation of similar programmes.

APC also pointed out that most of the rivers and streams of the region had been exploited and damaged by removal of sands and stones which had adversely affected the agriculture sector and suggested to introduce programmes for rejuvenation of the springs, rivers and river basin management.

The union secretary welcomed the suggestions and said that the union government was planning to hold consultants and conferences in future to discuss the issues.

He admitted the importance of spring shed and rejuvenation of springs, rivers and water bodies and assured that he would take up the matter with ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare.
