Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC) Nagaland Y Kikheto Sema has cautioned on the threat of unsolicited/mystery seed parcels from unknown sources.

In a circular, APC Y Kikheto Sema informed all the responsible departments to issue necessary instructions to the district heads to disseminate information to the farmers not to solicit or use seeds that were received through parcels with mislabelled packages of unknown source or seeds of unknown origin.

Further, APC said that if such parcels were received/noticed the matter should be immediately reported to authorities for necessary action.  Recently, The Guardian reported that people around world were receiving mystery seed parcels. The report stated that the packages have sparked biosecurity concerns and international investigations into their origins.

The Associated Press also reported that US agriculture authorities have asked residents who receive unsolicited packages of seeds from China in the mail to avoid opening them and contact the state.
