With the construction of district jail Longleng which started since 2011 going at a “snail’s pace”, the Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) has called upon the concerned department and state government to expedite the work in a month of two without citing excuses.

A press release from PSC media cell stated that, in the absence of a district jail at Longleng, the under trial prisoners and remand accused are all kept in district jail Mokokchung, which is 74 kms away from Longleng HQ, where public transport vehicles takes four hours to reach the designated destination from Longleng.

It also stated that, with the change in portfolio after every five years the promises made to complete the district jail by “every concerned who holds the portfolio now also seems to be a far-fetched dream.”

PSC also pointed out that Longleng was the lone district without a district jail in the entire state. In this regard, the apex civil societies namely Phom Peoples’ Council (PPC), Phomla Hoichem (PH) and Phom Laivangh Pangthai (PLP) under Longleng district visited the lone abandoned district jail to assess the progress of work on June 13. PSC has cautioned the concerned authorities that failing to comply with the demand of the apex bodies, the civil societies will take its own course of action.
