Asian water monitor lizard rescued in Kiphire

An Asian water monitor lizard (Varanus salvator), a schedule I reptile in the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, was rescued and released in Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary, Kiphire on May 20. 

According to wildlife warden, Kiphire wildlife division, Suman W M Sivachar, the reptile strayed into Longmatra village area on May 19. 

Following information, the forest personnel rushed to the area on May 20 and on being handed over by the members of Longmatra Village Council (LVC) and village Wildlife Conservation Committee (WCC), the reptile was released in the presence of Kiphire district administration. 

Meanwhile, the division expressed gratitude to LVC, Reny Wilfred SDO (Hq) and Kiphire district administration team, for their timely assistance.
