Assam police have arrested a man for allegedly operating fake Facebook accounts of 17 police officers, including those of the DGP, Kuladhar Saikia and Guwahati commissioner, Hiren Nath, Hindustan Times reported.
The crime branch of the Guwahati Police arrested 30-year-old Suleiman Ibrahim Ali from the city on Saturday evening.
“He admitted that he was operating fake Facebook profiles under the name of as many as 17 Indian Police Service officers,” Nath said.
The fake Facebook accounts operated by Ali include those of police officers from outside the state.
“He claims he was doing it just for fun. He would add the fake profiles of the police officers to his account, perhaps to show off the proximity to his friends,” Nath said.
Ali, son of a retired superintendent engineer of the state government, is unemployed. Apart from the 17 fake accounts of cops, he had six Facebook profiles under his name.
Police recovered 47 cellphones, 13 tablets and 15 SIM cards from Ali, who Nath said, claims to be fond of gadgets.
After the city police discovered the fake profiles, especially of the DGP, an investigation was launched in late June.
“We approached Facebook and they provided us with crucial information. Many of the profiles were registered with fake mobile numbers which made investigation difficult,” Nath said.
“He will be produced before the magistrate today (Sunday) and we will seek a week’s police custody to ascertain if it’s a big conspiracy,” Nath said.
