In this year’s Republic Day, the Assam tableau will showcase the tea garden of the state. The theme of the tableau of Assam is ‘Assam tea- the backbone of India’s economy.’ It has been cleared by the Union Ministry of Defence for presentation on January 26, the Republic Day parade in Delhi. The tableau will showcase Assam’s tea garden, tea workers’ culture and other related aspects of the tea industry, reports The Sentinel Assam.

The design for the tableau will be finalised on January 9, by a firm named, Image Creations. The information is shared by Preetom Saikia, the Commissioner and Secretary of Cultural Affairs Department.

Saikia said that due to the COVID-19 protocols, the number of participants in the tableau will be restricted. The idea behind this year’s tableau is to depict a tea garden and the activities associated with it, which also includes the cultural side such as the ‘jhumoor’ dance.

The expert committee, who is supervising the tableau preparation, reviewed the model on Monday and suggested a few modifications. Assam government has also deputed officials in Delhi, to look after the preparations there.

In last year’s Republic Day parade, Assam grabbed the limelight as it won its debut Republic Day award. The Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh gave away the Best Tableaux award to Assam last year. It was followed by Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, both in the second position.

Assam’s theme for last year’s parade was the ‘Land of Unique Craftsmanship and Culture.’ A total of 15 states and Union territories showcased different themes in their tableaus in last year’s Republic Day.

The tableau of Odisha showcased the Lord Lingaraja’s Rukuna Rath Yatra. On the other hand, the tableau of Uttar Pradesh showcased the cultural and religious heritage of the state.

Among the Ministries and Departments, the tableaux of National Disaster Relief Force and Jal Shakti Mission were chosen as the best last year.
