ATRPFM serves deadline demanding ADC election

All Tribal Rights Protection Forum Manipur (ATRPFM) on Monday served a deadline to the state government demanding that the notification for conducting elections to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) be announced by January 5, 2021.

In the ultimatum, the tribal body has also threatened to impose 48-hour bandh on the national highways from January 6 in the event of government failing to heed their demand.

The terms of the six ADCs that cover all hill districts of the state expired in May 2020. But the state government had extended the terms for six months that too expired on November 30 last.

However, citing various reasons, the state government was yet to take up steps for conduct of the elections even as various tribal based bodies were demanding conduct of the due elections without any delay.

The state government had also superseded the ADCs while handing over DCs to discharge the function of the ADCs.

It also stated that the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) recommended for conducting the election on time and not to extend the term further.

However, the state government issued a supersession order without taking into consideration the views and recommendation of HAC.

In a memorandum, the All Tribal Rights Protection Forum Manipur has appealed to the governor to interfere and take prompt necessary action and direct the state government to conduct the due elections.
