Awareness on mental health at Baptist College, Kohima

Awareness on mental health was organised by District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) Kohima on December 5 at Baptist College, Kohima (BCK).

A press release by DMHP Kohima stated that during the session, psychiatric social worker, Veronica Nriame, spoke on mental health and mental illness, common mental health issues experiences by adolescents/ young people.

She explained that young adults were at a particularly vulnerable time in their development, which might explain why 1 out of every 5 was affected by mental illness. 

Nriame cited depression, anxiety and addiction disorders as some common mental health problems encountered by young people.  

Nriame said it was very crucial for adolescents to be mentally healthy to enjoy optimum level of health.

Clinical psychologist, Ketousenuo Phewhuo, spoke on the symptoms and management of depression and anxiety disorders and stressed on the importance of offering emotional support, being understanding and patient. 

Earlier, the session began with welcome address by lecturer, Baptist College, Kohima, Dr Mhabeni Ezung.
