Attacking the BJP, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that the saffron party and the RSS control of Facebook and Whatsapp in India.

“They spread fake news and hatred through it and use it to influence the electorate,” he said.

Reacting to Gandhi’s tweet, Shashi Tharoor said that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology would “certainly wish to hear from Facebook about these reports and what they propose to do about hate-speech in India.”

Gandhi’s tweet comes after senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called Facebook “greatest carrier of lies” and termed it a “lethal threat to social harmony and reasoned debate.”

Ramesh also said that the Parliament must institute an inquiry into FB’s practices.

A report by the Wall Street Journal claimed that the social media company had ignored alleged hate speeches by members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The story also mentions that Congress had flagged concerns to a senior executive of the social media company whose name has popped up in the news report.

Facebook’s senior India policy executive had reportedly blocked the call for banning BJP’s Telangana MLA T Raja Singh from the social media platform and intervened when the MLA’s hate posts were flagged.

T Raja Singh, who represents Goshamahal assembly constituency in Hyderabad, had made communally sensitive posts on Rohingyas saying they should be shot dead. He had also called Muslims traitors and threatened to raze mosques.

Congress IT cell started running #AntiIndiaFacebook campaign on Twitter after WSJ news report went viral.

Congress’ National Coordinator for social media Gaurav Pandhi tweeted, “By enabling communal hate of BJP, @Facebook is running down Mahatma Gandhi’s values basis which our Independent India was founded. #AntiIndiaFacebook. The details of Zuckerberg’s company favouring hate speech in India for commercial success are disturbing.”

Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary blasted the Modi government saying it doesn’t only control media but social media too.

“Facebook has been showing partiality for a very long time. But now with this WSJ article, things become more clear. Modi Government doesn’t only control media but social media too,” he tweeted.

Congress IT cell chairman Rohan Gupta said Facebook is turning out to be the East India Company of 21st Century adding that it is no surprise that those who colluded with the British are now getting favours from Facebook to run down democracy in India.
