BJP lauds PM’s free ration initiative

Nagaland state BJP president Temjen Imna Along welcomed the Prime Minister’s initiative of free ration to 80 crore people in the country at the state BJP office Kohima on Thursday.  

Highlighting the initiatives of the PM at a press conference, the president maintained that PM has extended PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana for a further five months i.e from July till November for distributing free food grains to the poor section of the society in view of the increased need during the festivals.

He also informed that the government will incur an additional expenditure of Rs. 90,000 crore to provide 5 kgs of wheat and 1 kg of gram every month to the poor, adding that the free distribution of foodgrains to 80 crore people in India could feed 2.5 times the US population, 12 times the UK population and twice the European Union’s population.

He also added that Modi government had announced an additional allocation in the world’s largest food security scheme PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana earlier this year which aimed to ensure sufficient foods with the poor and needy amid the coronas virus crisis.

The foodgrains were to be distributed to all the beneficiaries under the targeted public distribution system (TPDS) for Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and priority household (PHH) ration cardholders, he informed.

The eligible individuals would receive 5 kgs of foodgrains and 1 kg gram per month for a period of three months between April and June, which has now been extended for five more months.

Further he said with the start of the lockdown the government came up with PMGKY and in the last three months, Rs 31 thousand crore has been directly deposited in the Jan-Dhan accounts of 20 crore poor families and upwards of 18 thousand crore were also deposited in the bank accounts of over 9 crore farmers, Along said.

The president informed that starting July, many festivals would begin like Guru Purnima on July 5 followed by Saawan and said during such time, the needs and expenses of all increases and therefore keeping all this in mind, PMGKY has been extended till Diwali and Chatth Puja till the end of November. He said the scheme was announced by the centre as part of the first rescue package during the COVID-19 pandemic and was coming to an end on June 30. 

To queries Along said ration card or AAY holders and even those who do not own ration cards and people in need will receive the food grains. 

He said inspite of the logistic difficulties in the state, state government reached out many people and claimed to have covered 90% in need in the state, adding that Nagaland has benefited a lot during the last three months and extension for another five months will relieve the people immensely.
