BJP to contest 60 Pungro-Kiphire seat

State BJP on Monday announced its decision to field candidate for the by-election to 60 Pungro-Kiphire Assembly constituency (AC) and shortlisted three probable candidates and sent their names to party’s national president.

BJP’s national general secretary (North East in-charge) Dilip Saikia informed Nagaland Post that the decision to put up candidate for the constituency was taken at a meeting of the party’s State unit leaders and legislators here on Monday in the presence of party’s North East zonal secretary, Ajay Jamwal.

Saikia said the meeting also finalised the strategy for the by-election, adding that national election committee would announce the name of the candidate very soon.

On reports of its ally-- NDPP, having friendly contest with the BJP, Saikia said was hopeful that the issue would be settled and reiterated that his party would not file candidate for by-poll to the 14-Southern Angami-I assembly constituency as the seat was not meant for the party as per the pre-poll alliance agreement. He said BJP would follow the 2018 pre-poll alliance deal.

On the demand for removal of State BJP president Temjen Imna Along, Saikia claimed that there was some communication gap and added that the issue would be taken up after the by-polls were over.

The party meeting also assigned deputy chief minister and BJP Legislative Party leader Y Patton as minister overall in-charge of the by-poll to 60 Pungro AC.

NPF not to attend consultative meet

Meanwhile, Dr. Liezietsu said that NPF has decided to not attend the consultative meeting scheduled to be held on October 15. Soon after NPF legislators withdrew from the Joint Legislators’ Forum and formed the Political Affairs Mission, Dr. Liezietsu said the members had met various Naga political groups and had been working towards bringing the 7 NNPGs and NSCN (I-M) to a common platform.

He said PAM has been doing a commendable job and therefore there was no point in attending the consultative meeting.

Opposition leader and convenor of PAM, T.R. Zeliang informed Nagaland Post that the latest position was that NSCN (I-M) was willing to have a sitting with the NNPGs. He said the NNPGs delegation was likely to leave for Delhi, during which both the sides will meet.
