The ruling BJP has registered a landslide victory in the Civic polls in Karbi Anglong (KA) and West Karbi Anglong autonomous district by winning all nine town committees of both districts.

Nearest rival Congress has been totally decimated in all urban areas of the district after the results were declared on Thursday evening.

It may be noted that elections for all the local bodies were held amid a 12-hour shutdown (bandh) imposed by various organizations of Karbi Anglong.

The town committees which went for polls were Diphu, Howraghat, Bokajan, Bakulia, Dokmoka, Hamren, Baithalangso, Donkamokum and Langhing. According to the declared results, BJP won all the seats in seven town committees except Howraghat where Congress won in one ward while BJP a inclined independent candidate won from another ward.

In the Baithalangso Town Committee, BJP registered a straight victory in four seats while Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) won two seats and one seat was won by another BJP inclined independent candidate.

In Bokajan Town Committee, BJP won six seats out of seven while Congress managed to win one seat. Counting is still taking place in Diphu, with BJP wining in seven seats out of the total 14 seats and maintaining a lead in maximum seats.

“We were hopeful about a clean sweep in both the autonomous districts considering the massive record-breaking voter’s mood, high proportion of voting means youth partaking which has always rallied round BJP” said Amarsing Tisso a triumphant BJP leader of East Karbi Anglong district committee.
