Blast rocks doctor’s house in Imphal

A bomb suspected to be hand grenade exploded at the residence of a doctor in Imphal late Saturday night as militant continued to target doctors in Manipur.

The hand grenade went off near the main entrance gate of Dr Khongbantabam Vyas Singh at Thangmeiband under Imphal police station of Imphal West district at around 11 pm  last night. The doctor is currently serving at Shija hospital, Imphal.

No casualty or damage of property was reported by the impact of the blast that created a pit of around half a foot deep and one foot in diameter.

Police suspect hands of a militant group behind the blast. The militant triggered the blast threatening the doctor in connection with monetary demand, the police said.

The police have lodged a suo-moto case under section 307/506/427 of IPC, 16/20 UAP Act & 3 explosive substances Act for investigation, the police said.

Saturday night’s bomb blast was not the first time that doctors’ residences were targetted by militants. 

Residence of a doctor of RIMS hospital, Imphal, Dr Thokchom Chito at the same Thangmeiband area of Imphal was attacked by a hand grenade on the night of April 24. The next day, doctors and PG students of RIMS Imphal staged a protest at the hospital campus, denouncing bomb threats to doctors.

During the protest, the doctors alleged that frequent bomb blast at the residences of the doctors have created panic among doctors, adding that it will be hard for a doctor to treat patents amidst threat.

Recently, a local media reported that following series of bomb threats and attack at their residences, doctors are now apprehensive of treating unknown patients in their homes.

Some doctors have avoided attending unknown patients who knocked at their doors for medical treatment, the report stated.
