Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) Maj. Gen. PC Nair Saturday said that the arrest of ‘maj. gen.’ Yanghang alias Mopa of the Augn Yung led NSCN (K) faction on June 21 was a major breakthrough for security forces in connection with the May 25 ambush at Aboi-Mon road, where two AR personnel were killed.

In continuation of the operation, security forces also seized two AK series rifles, 2 magazines and around 50 rounds of ammunition besides other items Saturday.

Sources, said that the seizure was made following interrogation of Mopa. During interrogation, the NSCN (K) functionary gave details of the locations where the arms and ammunitions were kept. They were found inside the jungle in a temporary hut, wrapped in plastic.

Addressing a press conference here at IGAR (N) Hq, Nair said Mopa, a self styled ‘maj. gen.’ was the highest ranking cadre of Aung Yung led NSCN (K) in India, and the chief architect of extortion and perpetrator of many heinous crimes. He was also controlling all operations of the faction in Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal, Nair added.

After the ambush, IGAR (N) said GOC-in-C Eastern Command, Lt Gen MM Naravane visited the forward areas on June 5, 2019 to exhort the troops to ensure relentless operations to apprehend the culprits. He had also announced a cash reward of Rs. Five lakhs for information leading to the arrest of those involved.

With the support of the local populace and under the aegis of 3 Corps, Maj. Gen. Nair said the Army, special forces and Assam Rifles of Eastern Command launched sustained military operations in all dimensions to nab the perpetrators.

IGAR (N) said Mopa’s arrest is not only a massive victory for security forces and state governments but also a relief amongst local population. “Security Forces have a firm resolve to continue their relentless operations to protect all the citizens from this bane of terrorism,” he added.

IGAR(N) appealed to all cadres to give up such futile course of violence and join the initiative of Government of India in cease-fire efforts to bring peace and development in the region.
