BSL-2 lab in Tuensang begins testing

Correspondent KOHIMA, SEP 4 (NPN) | Publish Date: 9/4/2020 12:46:09 PM IST

Seven days after its inauguration on 28 August, the State’s third Bio Safety Level-2 Integrated Molecular Diagnostic and Research Laboratory (BSL-2 lab) at Tuensang became functional from Friday as the first of the 266 samples was tested during the day.

Sources from the Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department informed Nagaland Post that one mentor for BSL Lab from North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong conducted test trials, after which the report was sent to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) New Delhi for approval.

The sources said ICMR had approved the functioning of the lab on Thursday and stated that two scientists and three technicians would conduct the tests.

The BSL laboratory at Tuensang could provide service to other far-flung districts of Kiphire, Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Longleng and Mon (Tobu).  Most of those who had tested positive for COVID-19 in Tuensang district were returnees.

However, five persons from Shamator block tested positive without travel history, the sources added.

COVID patients still treated at NHAK

Meanwhile, even after the rollback of Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) from being a designated COVID-19 hospital to normal public healthcare delivery service, active COVID positive patients were still being treated at the hospital.

When this Correspondent visited the hospital, it was learnt that the active COVID patients under the care of NHAK could not be shifted due to lack of adequate logistics and infrastructure.

However, sources said pre-testing for COVID-19 would be conducted on all patients being taken to NHAK for admission for treatment of other ailments, adding that modalities were being worked out for the safety of patient and healthcare workers.

It may be mentioned that all COVID-19 sample testing triage OPD/Flu OPD have been shifted to TT Stadium, Raj Bhavan, Kohima with effect from September 3 till further notice.
