By-poll to South Tura assembly constituency in Meghalaya will be held on August 23, Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor said on Monday.
In a notification issued here today, the Election Commission stated that the last date for filing nomination papers for the by-poll is on August 6. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 7 and the last date for withdrawal is August 9. Counting will take place on August 27.
However, the Election Commission is yet to announce the polling date for Ranikor constituency, following the resignation of Martin Danggo as member of the Meghalaya Assembly on June 22.
By-election to South Tura legislative assembly constituency was necessitated following resignation of first time National People’s Party (NPP) legislator, Agatha K Sangma.
Agatha resigned to pave the way for her elder brother Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. Conrad is still a sitting Lok Sabha member from Tura parliamentary constituency and likely to tender his resignation this week.
Conrad was sworn in as the chief minister on March 6 after the regional allies decided to support the NPP-led government only if he lead the government.
Agatha, who contested and won from the prestigious South Tura constituency in Meghalaya will have to contest three elections in a year. First she had contested from South Tura and won, now she will contest from Tura Lok Sabha seat and she will contest from the Tura Lok Sabha seat again in 2019.
The NPP, which is heading the six-party Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, is confident of winning both the assembly seats in the upcoming bypolls to the two constituencies.
“We are confident of getting back our seat in South Tura and we will win Ranikor too,” Deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said.
