The Northeast Development Party (NEIDP) has Monday reaffirmed its stand against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 (CAB) and stated that CAB will speed up ‘population dilution’ of the indigenous people in north east.

“Not only diluting the indigenous population of the region, CAB is anti-secular as it seek to grant citizenship based on religion. It is against the secularism structure of country’s Constitution,” said Ng Bijoy,  president, NEIDP Manipur unit.

The president of the regional political party alleged that there were more than 1.5 crore non-Muslim populace in Bangladesh. Once the Parliament clear the Bill and enact as an Act, these non-Muslim people will migrate to the region which will have a great impact to the demography of the indigenous population of the NE region, he stated.

The migrants entering the region will be assimilated among the indigenous populace of the region which will greatly impact the identity, culture, language, customs and socio-economic of the smaller indigenous communities, said Bijoy.

Considering the future impact on the indigenous people of the region, NEIDP has been strongly opposing the CAB and will continue to oppose against the Bill, he declared.
