Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID)-cum-national domestic workers movement and representatives of Eastern Nagas have resolved that the state government should include domestic workers in the schedule of employment under the Minimum Wages Act (Nagaland).

The meeting also resolved to discourage children in domestic work and demanded that domestic workers should be treated fairly. The decision was taken at the consultative meeting with the Assisi Centre for integrated development-cum-national domestic workers movement and representatives of Eastern Nagas specially the executive members, tribal unit presidents, women organizations and student bodies on July 8.

In a press statement, National Domestic Workers Movement-Nagaland Region coordinator, Sr. Pramila Lobo stated that, in the meeting issues for the welfare of domestic workers such as domestic workers rights and to register domestic workers as a member either with their respective village council/tribal unit bodies or National Domestic Workers Movement – Nagaland region were deliberated.

All the members at the meeting unanimously agreed that in Naga society, domestic workers and Eastern Nagas have become “synonymous” and there was need for domestic workers to be protected because the nature of their work was “unregulated” and “isolated”.

Different tribal units’ representative was also of the view that most of the domestic workers were brought to places like Dimapur and Kohima in lieu of providing better education and as bread winner for their family.
