CCAs of Phek district pledge to protect endangered species

Representatives of 36 Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) from the Phek district have pledged to protect the threatened and endangered species during a seminar held at Phek town council hall on May 8.  

A press release from NCCAF secretary, Heirang Lungalang stated that, resource persons were Sachin Jaiswal, deputy commissioner of Phek, Velatso Demo, DFO,  Phek, Pikato V. Jimo, Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED) and Yaranajit Deka, member POU), Foundation for Ecological Security.   
Sachin Jaiswal in his inauguration speech appreciated the efforts of the villages towards conservation of biodiversity and ecological balance. He appealed the participant villagers to take up similar efforts in their respective villagers. 
Velatso Demo, mentioned that Phek district has highest dense forest cover with 86.60 percent of total forest cover. He added, to protect the species habitat and establishing corridor, 5 CCAs have been notified as conservation reserves in the district so far. He also stressed on the conservation of water catchment areas and advocated for a separate watershed policy for conservation of such areas. 
Pikato V. Jimo appealed the CCAs to look at all the facet of the act before declaring CCAs as conservation reserve. Yaranajit Deka shared on how CCAs in the state are coming forward for conservation and protection of threatened and endangered species habitats.
Tokugha Sumi, joint secretary of Nagaland Community Conserved Areas Forum (NCCAF) gave a brief presentation of forum genesis and its objective and appealed all the CCAs to be part of the forum. 
Four resolutions were passed including protection of species in their village jurisdiction by the CCAs present. Vote of thanks was delivered by Shekhozo Thuluo.
