Central silk board assures help to Mnp silk farmers

Central government will extend all possible help in promoting silk production in Manipur, said KM Hanumantharayappa, chairman Central Silk Board on Thursday.

He said this while camping in Imphal to review various activities schemes and projects related with silk production as well as various issues concerning the functioning of the state sericulture department.

The chairman gave the assurance while talking to reporters at the sideline of a function at the office of the sericulture department in Imphal’s Sangaipat.

He said that Union ministry of textile will provide 90% subsidy in buying silk reeling machines besides imparting training to silk farmers to improve the quality and enhance silk production in the state.

Asserting that the kind of soil and climate of the state was suitable for growing mulberry trees and rearing silk worms, the chairman called for a concerted effort to enhance the production.

Impressed with the activities taken up the sericulture department, the chairman said “let’s work jointly to achieve the goal.”

Manipur is not only the largest producer of silk in the entire north eastern region, the state is one of the unique states in the world where four varieties of Silk - Muberry, Eri, Muga and Oak Tasar - are produced.

The cultivation of sericulture in the state has a long tradition and has been practiced in both hills and plains since time immemorial.

The team is in Imphal as part of Central Silk Board’s visit to all silk producing states of the country. 

During the visit, the team members will interact with farmers to study the problems and issues faced by them, the chairman said.

Earlier, the team led by the chairman called on the chief minister at his office chamber and discussed on the prospect of silk production in the state.
