The assault on Congress MLA Rumi Nath sparked off violent protests and a bandh in south Assam’s Barak Valley today as police resorted to lathicharge and apprehended five persons involved in the attack.

Tension prevailed for the second day in Barak Valley over the assault of the MLA and her second husband Jacky Zakir as violence was reported from several areas.

Karimganj: Assam police on Sunday detained five people for allegedly beating up Borkhola Congress MLA Rumi Nath and her second husband Jaki Jakir.

Superintendent of police Pradip Pujari said, “Five persons suspected to have been involved in the attack on the woman MLA have been arrested from here.”

Reportedly, Nath and her second husband were attacked by a mob on Friday night while they were in a hotel at Karimganj. The crowd was displeased over MLA’s second marriage without divorcing the first husband.

The couple was beaten up badly and they were escorted to Guwahati where they received proper medical treatment.
An FIR has been lodged by Nath and she says that the attack was a result of “political motivation”. Pujari said that a detailed probe on the matter will be carried out.

Controversial Assam MLA Rumi Nath, who was beaten up by agitated mob in Karimganj district on Friday night, has alleged that the furious mob took off her clothes and even tried to rape her.

33-year-old Congress MLA from Borkhola, Assam, had gone to dine with her 28-year-old husband, a clerk in a state government department, when the agitated mob comprising several hundreds barged into her room and attacked her.

Rumi Nath, who was badly bruised by some assailants told mediapersons, “They (attackers) misbehaved with me. Even tried to rape and kill me.” “I believe it was a political conspiracy,” Congress MLA Rumi added.
