A non-Naga identified as Shyam Alley (45) son of  Mon Bahadur Alley, a resident of Y. Zhimo colony of Lhomithi village committed suicide Wednesday morning in the lock-up of Women Cell Dimapur.

According to additional superintendent of Police, Dimapur (PRO) Wati Jamir, Alley was found hanging from the small ventilator of the lock-up by the women cell sentry at 10.45 a.m. when the latter went to summon him for cross examination. PRO said that the body bore just the mark of the cloth with which the deceased hanged himself.

Earlier, Alley had been brought to Government Railway Police Station (GRPS) Dimapur on June 18 night after a woman informed GRPS about a man lying on the railway tracks in an inebriated condition, said PRO.

The next day, the wife of the Shyam, Bobita Alley along with the secretary of Y. Zhimo colony went to the police station and lodged an FIR against him for physically and mentally torturing her (Bobita) for the last three years.

The case was then forwarded to Sub-urban police station the same evening.  However, since the case was filed under the domestic violence act, Alley was forwarded to Women Cell Dimapur, on June 20 at 10:15 a.m.

PRO said that after conducting preliminary examination and necessary entries for the office record, Alley was kept in the lock-up at 10:30 a.m. for “safe custody”.

On Wednesday Bobita Alley, the wife who summoned to report to the Police Station, arrived. A sentry was then asked to fetch Shyam for cross examination, the sentry found his body hanging inside the cell. PRO said inquest over the body was conducted by the executive magistrate in the presence of independent witnesses which have been video graphed.

Requisition was also made for forensic experts and the body has been sent to district hospital Dimapur for post mortem.
