Choice and its consequences

And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.” Genesis 13: 10

God has given us the freedom to Choose right and wrong as well the good and Bad. We are not auto machine that moves and behave according to the central command of the manufacturer intention. We all have choices to make in daily life’s and response according to its needs. As Christian what we see and observed very keenly if not reflected properly will become part of us.

When we see the above bible passage, The Bible said after few years of working along with Abraham, his flocks increases in number and Lot plan to come along with Abraham was the best choice. When their possession increases in great number they need to depart as family. Abraham gave the first choice to Lot to choose his own interest and will. Let us see the choice of Lot and Abraham.

Lot Choice

1. As freedom was bestowed upon him, Lot looks everywhere, East and west, North and South as much as his eye can possibly scan. Nobody decided for him and after few mental calculations, his eyes and mind, nod yes and he decided to walk eastward. In many ways we tend to take decision according to our circumstances, conveniences, Criticism and convictions. Many people took choice according to their own conveniences too.

2. He choose what is best according to him, “Me First” and my own needs. He does care only for himself and sharing the needs of other was low profile, He care less for his own brethren. His choice was best for him. He want to grab and grab as much as his paw can grab or seize.

3. He chooses his occupation and business over his own family affairs. Many people are married to their own occupation rather than their own wife and husband.

4. He had been blessed by God abundantly and had many flocks but the Bible is very silent about his giving in terms of sacrifice to God and he did not have an Altar for God to worship.

5. Those choices was the beginning of gradual but steadily spiritual decline of his inner soul, he did not seeks Gods approval in first place but follow what is conveniently good at present.

Abraham Choice.

1. Abraham in many occasions ask Gods plan and he knew that what he sees is very temporary and his present choice does not dictate his future rather God has the best choice for him.

2. Abraham see tomorrow not his land but Gods Land and he let God choose his land and let God become his GPS for his life’s journey. Just simple faith makes a man faith strong and vibrant not complicated knowledge about God.

3. Abraham built an Altar for the Lord for thanksgiving and for the sacrifices to God almighty.

4. Abraham after his death, about 600 years the land that he trod upon as refugees became the reality for his generation and descendants till today it’s occupied.

Lot moves three times after his departure from Abraham, every time he moves its closer to worldly and its enjoyment. Every time he pack his things to move out from one place to another, he can hears the sound of the glamorous and the beauty of the city , it become very bright and it captivated his heart. The first time he moves along with his family near Sodom Genesis 13: 12. “Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom.” The second move happen about ten years, he moves in city itself. Genesis 14; 12 “They also took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods and departed.” The Third move is his position as the elders or official of the city. In a very subtle way he became part of that famous city of sin. Genesis 19: 1.

There are times as good Christian may all evaluate ourselves to how we are been attracted and captivated in our inner soul and life. May we all evaluated how much we love to enjoy ourselves with the things of this world and forgetting eternal grace. May we all evaluated ourselves to how much time, and energy are being spent for the temporary world and our investment for eternal goodness. Many people also mourn for the loss of this world and may we evaluated how far have we have gone from Godly blessings to temporary enjoyment in our personal and family areas. After the destruction of the city of Sin, we can see Lot lost his faith and character, he lost his wife, he committed incest with his daughter. His descendants became one of the enemy from one generation to another with the people of Israel. Jesus when he was alive he said as quote by Luke 17: 32, “Remember Lot wife.”

Today as we see the trends within our Naga society, are we moving toward Sodom and when everybody does it, has it become a social acceptable norms or what? Many of our powerful Politicians in Nagaland are acting like Lion of the Jungle but may I remind that they are not even a small cat, they are mere human being and it will be good if they can also realized that they are human. Election is also here and may our choice be Sodom or Hebron. Choose prayerfully and may we pluck good fruits one day as rich harvest. Our Christianity and our life should be parallel if not we are no better than life of those Sodom and Gomorra people. Proverbs 14: 34. “Righteousness exalts the nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.”

Is Naga people, no better than Lot and his wife? Lord Help us !!!
