Fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi acquired citizenship without any legal hurdle because India did not provide any “adverse information” regarding him, the government of Antigua and Barbuda has said.

“The Police clearance certificate from the Government of India, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Regional Passport Office, Mumbai, certified that there was no adverse information against Mehul Chinubhai Choksi which would render him ineligible for grant of travel facilities including visa for Antigua and Barbuda,” said the Citizenship by Investment Unit of Antigua and Barbuda.

The Ministry of External Affairs is yet to comment on the revelation by the authorities of the eastern Caribbean country.

According to information from the government of Antigua and Barbuda, the passport issued by it is one of the best travel documents as it allows the citizens to enjoy visa free travel to nearly 132 countries, including the United Kingdom and the Schengen area.

Choksi is a co-accused in the scam involving several public sector banks in India. He acquired the citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda iin November last. He and his nephew Nirav Modi, also a diamond trader accused in the scam, left India in January last.

He has ever since reportedly travelled across the world. It is understood that he travelled using the Antiguan passport. The MEA revoked his passport in February.

Antigua and Barbuda maintained that Choksi’s application for citizenship by investment was subjected to “stringent background checks” but “in no instance any derogatory information is disclosed on the applicant.”
