Post Mortem

Congratulatory note to Dr. Michael Van Walt Van Praag

While the United Nations (UN) was formed in 1945 to save humankind from the scourges of war and to prevent further conflicts in the backdrop of World War II, as the most powerful intergovernmental organization of the world, consisting of Sovereign States, many Nations and Peoples Organizations were denied voices within the systems of the United Nations. It was in this context that The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) was established in 1991 as an international membership organization to facilitate the voices of unrepresented and marginalised Nations and peoples of the world, with its headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands.

You, Dr. Michael Van Walt Van Praag, under your leadership as a key Founding Member of UNPO and also as the first General Secretary, many Nations and Peoples Organizations who joined the Organization has since gained full Independence and have joined the United Nations. Nagas were also admitted as a member of UNPO under your leadership in January 1993 enabling our people to gradually enter into a Ceasefire and Political Negotiation with the government of India in 1997. It was then, in the post-ceasefire situation, that you came into close contact with the Naga Civil Society Organizations in which the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) played critical roles in coordination works and developed a friendship of good-will towards finding sustainable peace, human rights and a just and dignified political solution for the Naga peoples, keeping in mind the concerns of the Government and people of India.

And at a time when the whole world is struggling with the corona virus pandemic, news of your being awarded and honoured with a Knighthood by the Government of The Netherlands on the 24th of April 2020, in recognition of “His life-long dedication and commendable achievements in support of the unrepresented and oppressed nations and peoples of the world; his tireless mediating activities to resolve intrastate conflicts through the non-profit organization Kreddha; as well as his academic pursuits,”, came with so much encouragement. We also understand that you are also honoured with the Royal Distinction of Commander in the order of Orange-Nasseu for your “exceptional service to society with a global impact”. This is indeed an honour not only for you, but an honour for all the unrepresented and oppressed Nations and peoples of the world, including the Nagas, whom you had so humanely touched.

Words are inadequate to express our profusely heartfelt gratitude to you, Dr. Michael Van Walt Van Praag, for the achievement you have made and to thank the Government of The Netherlands for honouring you at such a crucial period of human history and for bringing joy and glory to the hearts and minds of millions of oppressed nations and peoples across the world. Having said that, we are also reminded today, how under the facilitation of the Dutch Government that the Government of India, for the first time in the history of our political conflict, have in writing recognised “the Unique history and situation of the Nagas” in 2002, at Amsterdam, which has sustained the peace talks in many ways, till date. NPMHR takes this opportunity once again to Congratulate you and wish you a healthy and happy long life.

Neingulo Krome,

Secretary General, NPMHR
