With a vision to protect the interests of consumers, a consumer rights body called ‘Organization for Consumer Rights Awareness’ (OCRA) was officially launched at PVC Hall, Phesama Village, Kohima district on February 16.

A press release from the organisation stated that department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LMCP), Government of Nagaland, additional controller & HoD, Beizo M Kuotsu graced the launching.

In his speech, Beizo stated that the inception of such a welfare group would not only empower voices of individuals to fight for consumerism but also take up the responsibility of acting as a vigilant body to ensure completion of development or other welfare activities.

Kutosu admitted that the importance of consumer rights had mostly been understood only in the last few years. “Efforts then broadened in spheres of forming organizations and welfare bodies, organizing programmes for spreading awareness and educating consumers and checking anomalies”, Kuotsu added.

“Consumers are legally entitled to a refund, repair, replacement or repeat service if there is a problem with any good or service they buy,” he said.

Pointing out that Nagas were complacent and modest in their approach to rights, Koutsu called the members present to be assertive against anomalies and corruption.

Vipu Zashümo, who  delivering the keynote address, said the organization aims to fulfil the dynamic needs of consumerism by checking against  the onslaught on consumers and seek redressal against unfair practices.

The program was chaired by Ketholeto Zashümo and Vito-o Kuotsu pronounced the invocation. Pamphlets on the Consumer Protection Act 1986 and Protection rules 1987 were also distributed during the launching program.

Launched on December 3,1990. Nagaland Post is the first and highest circulated newspaper of Nagaland state. Nagaland Post is also the first newspaper in Nagaland to be published in multi-colour.
