A couple were injured when an IED exploded near the main entrance gate of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) complex, Imphal on Monday.

A 40-year-old man, Papao Guite (42) and his wife Hoipi (40) who had went to the hospital for treatment were injured in the blast that occurred at around 9.30 am, police said. The couple sustained splinter injuries on their hands and legs. They have been admitted in the same hospital.

“We came to the hospital for a health check-up to their ailing mother. When we are trying to get their mother out from the vehicle the blast occurred,” the wife said. Doctors attending them said that both sustained minor injuries.

Soon after the blast, police rushed to the spot and launched a search operation near the area.

Top officials of the state police department also rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation.

State police DIG Themthing Ngashangva, who was among the top officials, strongly condemned the incident and told reporters that it was a cowardly act targeting innocent people at a place where medical treatments are being given.

He alleged that the blast was triggered while police were focussing in the enforcement of COVID-19 SOP at markets in view of the Ningol-Chakouba festival.

“Such a blast near a sensitive area of the hospital during COVID-19 pandemic and festival time is not expected by the police, ‘’ he said, and added that the perpetrator(s) will be arrested soon.  No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the blast.
