COVID-19 scare dampens Cheiraoba spirit

“Sajibu Cheiraoba (the New Year of Manipuri lunar calendar), this time was celebrated with a subdued spirit across Manipur valley on Wednesday.

The tradition of climbing hills nearby the valley districts to worship the hill deity, married women visiting their parental homes to present gifts to their parents and brother and wishing them prosperity etc are the main highlights of the celebration. People however avoided all these events owing to public curfew imposed across the state to combat the spread of COVID-19 and it scare.

Reinforcing total lockdown till March 31, Manipur government through the district administration across the state has promulgated indefinite curfew under sub-section 2 of section 144 of CrPC.

The curfew came into force since 8 am on Tuesday. Since then,  police have been strictly enforced restriction of  people moving out of their houses, particularly in the twin capital districts of the state. The restriction coupled with COVID-19 fears compelled people to remain indoors for the second consecutive day.
