CPO welcomes delimitation

Chakhroma Public Organisation (CPO) has thrown its weight behind the proposed delimitation exercise in the State and welcomed Chief Election Commission’s decision in this regard. CPO president Vichütuolie Mere and general secretary Mhiesisato Vüprü in a statement pointed out that the existing allocation of Assembly constituencies in Nagaland did not do justice to the people.

Stating that it was aware and that it respected wish of State’s every tribe to have representatives in the state Assembly, CPO however said that people’s representative was also based on population. Citing Dimapur as instance, CPO said it had only five seats despite having the largest population, whereas some other districts having lesser population were having more than 6 representatives.

Thus, having full knowledge about the disproportionate share of constituencies, Delimitation Commission was competent enough to carry out the delimitation exercise and no data was required in this regard for the exercise, which CPO supports, the statement added.

Admitting that a solution to the vexed Indo-Naga political issue was required, CPO however pointed out that readjustment of Assembly constituencies and the solution were two completely different subjects.

Clarifying that it would welcome if Assembly constituencies were increased after the solution was finalised, but the organisation explained that in this case too, readjustment of seats would be ensured. Up to that extend, there was no threat that any tribe would be denied of its due share. Therefore, the Indo-Naga solution should not be a stumbling block to readjustment of Assembly seats, it added.

CPO hoped Delimitation Commission would deliver justice to the people of Nagaland through the delimitation exercise, which was long due.
