Indian Dental Association Nagaland State Branch (IDANSB) has appealed the state government for creation of more dental surgeons post, upgradation of dental sector, fair and transparent means of recruitment in recently created post for health care workers under Health & Family department.

A press release by IDANSB president, Dr. Kaketo Yepthomi stated that, there should be creation of dental surgeon posts in all community health centres (CHC) in the interest of the general public. It mentioned that out of the 28 CHCs in the state, only 5 posts were created against 5 CHCs in Feb 2012. After a gap of 8 long years, 3 new posts were recently created.
IDANSB further asked that posts of specialist/consultants in district hospitals be provided to enhance quality health care services, while post of dental hygienist in district hospital and CHCs be taken as must to assist the dental surgeons.
It also called for upgradation of dental equipments in all district hospitals and CHCs pointing out that department of Health and Family welfare has not issued/supplied even a single equipment or material to dental sector. Pointing out that at present, altogether there were only 14 functional dental chairs in the whole of Nagaland, namely 1 (one) dental chair in Kohima District Hospital NHAK (semi-functional), 2 (two) in Dimapur District Hospital, 2 (two) in Mokokchung, 2 (two) in Tuensang and 1 (one) each in rest of districts hospitals, the IDANSB claimed that most of the dental units were either in semi-function or non-functional state due to non maintenance.
IDANSB, therefore urged the government that atleast 5 (five) fully functional dental chairs be provided in district hospitals like Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung where hundreds of patients walk in everyday to seek treatment and minimum 3 (three) functional dental chairs in every districts hospitals. It also stated that portable X-ray for diagnosis, light cure, ultrasonic scaling equipment, computer set and other necessary materials and consumable items be supplied to district hospitals and CHCs on regular basis.
IDANSB further appealed for provision of adequate safety equipments and measures to all dental surgeons, so that infection control and prevention of this dreadful COVID-19 disease can be done while providing oral health care services to people in need.
On the issue of the recently created post under department of Health and Family Welfare, the IDANSB stated that selection of candidates basing on the marks obtained in university examinations cannot be considered fair, since scoring of marks in examinations can vary a great deal from university to university and government or private run institute.
To adopt fair, transparent and acceptable means of recruitment, the IDANSB has appealed government that preference must be first given to meritorious candidates/government nominees who underwent medical studies by qualifying JEE in the interest of hundreds of aspiring medical graduates.
IDANSB also stated that dental surgeons have been rendering their services with all sincerity in fighting the novel COVID-19 pandemic, where every technical branch (MBBS, BDS, Ayush, nursing, drug control and food safety) under department of Health and Family Welfare has their own designated duty and role to play in delivering health care services.
