DAPCU, PDLSA discuss plight of PLHIV

The district consultation & follow up meeting on stigma and discrimination, CABA uptake of social protection schemes and legal protection, was organised by District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU) in collaboration with Phek District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) at MS conference hall, DH Phek on September 5. 

A press release from Nagaland State Legal Services Authority, Kohima, public relation assistant stated that president PNP + Phek, Mese Lekro spoke about the issue of stigma and discrimination faced by Persons Living with HIV (PLHIV) such as separation and segregation, at village levels, excommunication, non acceptance in society and hospitals refusing check-ups. He said that because of stigma and discrimination, PLHIV were hesitant to go for medical check-ups in their respective districts. He also lamented that most of the PLHIV were from Below the Poverty Line.

A representative from the Social Welfare department highlighted one particular scheme among many i.e government grant-in-aid for a registered NGO looking after PLHIV. District child protection officer, Ketobu highlighted ICPS under which PLHIV could avail help. 

He said that there were Children’s Home in Phek town, Meluri, Pfutsero, Chetheba and Chozuba. Further, he highlighted a scheme called sponsorship scheme for HIV infected child (school going) at the rate of Rs 1000 per month.

Retainer lawyer, Mamang Singson, spoke on the ways and measures to contain stigma and discrimination faced by the PLHIV.

Responding to a question regarding ex-communication of PLHIV from villages, N. Longshithung Ezung, district & sessions judge and chairman PDLSA said that such matters could be dealt with by the PDLSA. Altogether 21 beneficiaries attended the program.
