District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Mon organised a one-day sensitization program on the importance of legal adoption under Juvenile Justice Act 2015 on July 24 at DRDA conference hall Mon with Kumar Ramnikant ADC Mon as the special guest.

According to a press release from DCPU Mon unit, the ADC said that most couples wanted to have children of their own, but due to infertility or other factors, some were unable to conceive children. Hence, for want of children, couples resort to adopting children of their relatives or other children, he added. However, he pointed out that like other districts in the country, Mon district had also established orphanages from where couples could adopt children. He urged the gathering to disseminate information widely and also generate awareness of legal provisions associated with adoption.
Mariam Arolim, coordinator of John 3:16 Society, as the resource person, highlighted the importance of legal adoption and the resources available in the district such as District Child Protection Unit, Child Welfare Committee and Specialized Adoption Agency. She stated that the adopted child was permanently separated from his/her biological parents and became the lawful child of the adoptive parents.
CDPO Mon, Tongwang Yanlem outlined the basic structure of the Social Welfare department.
The program was attended by nurses, Asha workers, Angawadi workers, society leaders and NGOs. Keynote address was presented by Samuel Kapu DCPO Mon. Menuo, pastor Tenyimi Church Mon, invoked God’s blessing for the program and a welcome address was given by Wangka PO (IC) and the vote of thanks by Nginging Konyak PO (NIC).
