District level children’s parliament-Peren annual interface meeting with stakeholders and inter-school debate under the theme, “With Children, For Children; From Idea to Action” was held on December 12 at St. Xavier Higher Secondary School, Jalukie.

The event was organised by Children’s Parliament initiative in Nagaland under the aegis of Development Association of Nagaland (DAN).

A press release from DAN stated that special guest of the event, ADC, Jalukie, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang enlightened the children on importance of children participation on governance.

He stated that the importance of participation as a means by which adolescents are involved in the development, implementation and monitoring of all relevant legislation, policies, services and programmes affecting their lives, including at the local level, can thus lead to better services, move responsive local policies and plans, and a more effective use of local budgets in support of children’s priorities.

Dr. Tinojongshi asserted that importance that design elements should be considered holistically rather than in a linear fashion in collaboration with key stakeholders, particularly children and local government.

He told the children that it was time to address the more practical aspects of the participation mechanism design. He said from a governance perspective, the participation of children can lead to better and more responsive decision-making and can inform stronger, more effective services.

The parliamentary session was led by presiding officer Milka, deputy speaker of district level children’s parliament.

Inter-School debate competition was also held in the second session on the topic, “Children’s Participation in Governance- Liability or Asset”.

The best speakers of the session were awarded to Chenlimi Tshanguru from St. Xavier Higher Secondary School, Jalukie and Ngimyile Zeliang from All Saints Higher Secondary School, Peren.
