Dmu observes global IDD prevention day

Dimapur district observed global Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) prevention day across the district on October 21.

A press release by CMO office Dimapur stated that, deputy CMO, Dr. Antoly Suu as resource person sensitised stated that an adult person required only 150 micrograms of iodine for normal growth, development and functioning of both the brain and the body. She informed that without enough iodine, a newborn’s brain and body could become permanently stunted thus, it was important to consume only iodized salt.

She further stated that sale of non-iodized salt for human consumption was a punishable offence and the department takes stern measures to enforce the law. She added that traders must label non-iodized salt for animals and farms as “not for human consumption”.

CMO Dimapur, Dr. Mereninla Senlem urged participants to consume only iodized salt and to spread the information to their families, friends and neighbors. Meanwhile, participants pledged to consume only iodized salt and ASHAs in villages demonstrated how to test if their salt contained iodine. 

Traders and store keepers of iodized salt will also be sensitized.
