Panchayati Raj initiative on “tobacco control in times of COVID-19 pandemic” was organised by District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) Dimapur Friday at Panchayat Hall, Signal Angami Village.

A press release by DTCC Dimapur stated that resource person, district nodal officer, National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) Dimapur, Dr. Reyosalu Lase Vizo highlighted on the dangers of tobacco during the pandemic. She said consuming tobacco could complicate the situation both in terms of transmission and co-morbidities.

Dr. Reyosalu said tobacco use in general had higher chance of transmission of COVID-19 virus by hand to mouth contact and also through spitting, which can lead to community transmission.

She pointed out that spitting in public was banned and a punishable offence.

PowerPoint presentation on “management of COVID-19 dead body” was also presented.

The gathering was informed that risk of COVID-19 infection from a dead body to health worker or family was unlikely as the main source of infection was through droplets.

The programme chaired by youth president, Kezevi Natso was attended by village leaders, women leaders and student leaders of the village. Posters, pamphlets and masks were also distributed to participants.
