The Election Commission of India (ECI) has postponed the Lok Sabha election under the 2nd phase in Tripura East from April 18 to April 23.

Informing this, the CEO of Tripura, Sriram Taranikanti told The Northeast Today on Tuesday that the decision to postpone the election was to take up more confidence building measures in Tripura East.

“For that reason, we want to do more patrolling with our existing forces in the environment there and make it conducive for conduct of free and fair polls,” he said. He also confirmed the removal of the State Additional Director General of Police and sources informed that law and order will be directly reviewed by the DGP. Meanwhile, reports suggest that the polls was postponed in the view of the deteriorating law and order scenario following allegations of poll rigging and booth capturing by the BJP. The Congress and CPI (M) had earlier demanded re-polling in 464 booths of west Tripura constituency ahead of phase 2 of Lok Sabha polls.
